At China Middle School, Mrs. Paquette’s Gifted and Talented class studied theme and expressed their ideas through non-linguistic photo essays. Students selected themes and captured images at home, which were then shared with Mrs. Paquette. Eighth graders at China Middle School had the opportunity to visit the University of Maine at Orono for an immersive STEM exploration day. Students began with a journey through the cosmos, learning about the solar system and stars, before participating in interactive physics demonstrations. Gifted & Talented students attended a presentation at Messalonskee Middle School with Colby College geologist Dr. Bess Koffman. They explored Antarctic ice core research to understand climate change and global warming. Students then applied high-level data analysis in collaborative exercises, extending their unit on The Art and Science of Snow. #WeAreRSU18
Eighth grader Emma Bailey of South China won Best Supporting Performer in a non-professional production of Matilda (Spring 2025). BroadwayWorld announced the winners this month, recognizing Emma’s talent and dedication. Months of rehearsal—including vocal and dance coaching, stunt training, and 10–15 hours per week of practice—did not slow her academics. With performances at the Waterville Opera House, Emma’s hard work contributed to the production winning 12 awards in the amateur category. Congratulations, Emma! #WeAreRSU18 #ChinaClippers
China Middle School sixth graders explored the Gulf of Maine ecosystem during a hands-on field trip to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in Portland.
Students took on the roles of scientists, investigating marine life like lobsters and Black Sea Bass, exploring climate change impacts on habitats, and collecting and analyzing real-world data with lab equipment, including microscopes. The immersive experience deepened their understanding of ecosystems and resilience while sparking curiosity and collaboration. #WeAreRSU18 #ChinaClippers
The Super Bowl Food Drive was a big win at China Middle School! Thanks to the generosity of students, families, and staff, the drive was a huge success.
