Engaging Economics

At China Middle School, Mrs. Plamondon’s seventh and eighth grade social studies class is currently exploring the subject of economics. As part of their educational experience, they have enthusiastically embraced the Adopt A Cow program offered by Discover Dairy. Discover Dairy is described as “an engaging, interactive, cross-curricular educational series” that integrates core standards such as math, science, and reading to create an enjoyable learning environment in the classroom. Through this program, each class is assigned a different cow to observe as it grows in hopes to gain insights into the farming industry. In this case, the class was given a cow named “Gal” and she hails from Brigeen Farm in Turner. This initiative has allowed the students to familiarize themselves with crucial vocabulary related to economics – including terms like human, natural, and capital resources. Furthermore, the class receives monthly updates on Gal’s progress, providing them with ongoing opportunities to expand their knowledge of the farming industry. This hands-on learning experience not only makes economics more engaging, but it also fosters a deeper understanding of the vital role agriculture plays in our society. Additionally, the students have dedicated a week to delve into essential life skills, including topics such as salaries, school loans, taxes, budgeting, and record-keeping. This immersive experience has been facilitated through a game aptly named “Life.” Through this interactive and engaging activity, students gain practical insights into managing their finances and navigating the complexities of real-world economic responsibilities. It equips them with valuable skills that are not only relevant in the classroom but also essential for their future financial well-being.#WeAreRSU18 #ChinaClippers
