National History Day at CMS
Students in Mr. Reed’s 8th grade Social Studies class at China Middle School presented their National History Day Projects to their classmates, friends, and family members on the mornings of January 22nd and 23rd in the CMS library.
National History Day is a national competition that encourages students to research a topic around a theme and present that research in a public fashion. This year’s theme was “Breaking Barriers in History,” and students spent time in class evaluating primary and secondary sources about their topics, crafting thesis statements, providing historical context about the time period, constructing support for their thesis, and creating either a museum exhibit or website to share all that they learned.
Now that their classwork is complete, if they choose to, students may take their work to the regional competition where they will be judged against other middle school students from around Southern Maine and have the opportunity to earn prizes and an invitation to the statewide competition.
