STEAM Day at CMS

China Middle School held a STEAM day for 7th and 8th graders on October 10th. The event, designed to expose students to a variety of ways of using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math, was organized by Kern and Keith Kelley and was funded through a grant.

Students kicked off the morning with a high altitude balloon launch and then spent the rest of the day working their way through 4 workshop options: 3d Design and Printing, Create your own Virtual World, Coding with Drones, and STEAM Powered Problem Solving

“Our goal was to take the learning our students do every day and apply it in new and interesting ways,’ said CMS Math teacher Joshua Schmidt. “All of the projects were really fun, but the best part of the day was the kids asking when we get to do this type of activity again. Now, we’re using some of the parts of STEAM day in our regular classes to see our students apply their knowledge in the real world.”

CMS wrapped up the day’s events with a show and share to allow students to highlight their favorite aspects of the day. Prizes were given out for the Breakout EDU room and for completing challenges in 3D printing with Mr. Schmidt.

CMS hopes to have another STEAM day in the future and will be looking for more opportunities to incorporate STEAM-based activities into the curriculum in the meantime.
